Entwining the traditions of precious candles from the 13th century and silver tableware from the 17th century, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby’s surtout de table is an expression of delicate opulence articulated through the glistening architectural towers of 958 Britannia silver candlesticks. The Britannia silver standard was introduced in 1697 as an alternative to the 925 Sterling and represents a silver of a higher grade and purity. Its inherent quality allows a flawless mirror surface, over which the flames of each candle can play.
The ‘towers’ are fixed upon a hovering silver landscape which rests on a hidden under-base of golden-polished pearwood to create a cityscape of candle light. Each tower rises on a starburst pattern of silver blades and is crowned by a flawless disc of mirrored silver.
Cidade is hand made by one of the finest independent silversmiths, Steven Ottewill. Its creation demands spinning, rolling, hand-joining, casting and is finished with the timeheavy process of graduated hand polishing to produce a symphony of flawless silver surfaces and endless reflections.
